EMMA DEXTER TO JOIN TIMOTHY TAYLOR GALLERY; SCHNEIDER’S CUBE GETS A VENUE

ART & SOCIETY

Timothy Taylor Gallery announced yesterday that Emma Dexter, formerly senior curator at Tate Modern, will be joining the gallery in May as director of exhibitions. The gallery will be moving to larger premises at Carlos Place in Mayfair this autumn. Meanwhile, the Art Newspaper reports that the Hamburger Kunsthalle will unveil Gregor Schneider’s Cube, a forty-six-foot cube of black-fabric-covered scaffolding inspired by the Ka’ba at Mecca, in March. The work was withdrawn from the 2005 Venice Biennale and the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin last year. Felix Kramer, project manager of the Hamburg exhibition, said, “There has been no opposition here. We have been in close cooperation with local representatives of the city’s Muslim community since we launched the project in autumn 2005 and have had huge support from the city. It is significant that previous criticism of the Cube came from the authorities in Venice and Berlin and not from Muslim leaders.”
