Fire Damages Public Artwork in Freiburg; Arson Suspected

A sculpture by the Berlin-based artist Reiner Maria Matysik has been damaged by fire in a suspected case of arson at the University of Freiburg in Germany, reports the Badische Zeitung.

Installed at the university campus in 2009, the sculpture, made of polyester and resin, is worth an estimated $85,000. Titled Augenloss (Eyeless), it was the winning entry for an art competition for the new building, funded by taxpayer money.

The artist has said he is not sure if he will restore the work or leave it damaged.
