FREE ART SCHOOL BASED IN LONDON, OPEN SCHOOL EAST, WILL MOVE TO MARGATE

Gareth Harris of the Art Newspaper writes that Open School East (OSE), the tuition-free art school based in East London, will move to the seaside town of Margate next year. Many artists reside in Margate due to its affordability.

Since 2013, the school, which accepts applications from emerging artists, has been housed in Hackney’s Rose Lipman Building. A variety of artists, critics, and curators lead workshops at the school, and studio spaces are available to those who are able to donate some of their time to an assortment of community activities. Thus far, forty artists have taken part in the school’s program.

The school’s new home in Margate will be at Resort Studios, a members-based arts assembly. The school’s study program is made up of three terms, running from February to December. The artist Matthew Derbyshire is creating the first-term curriculum. The artist Lucy Beech and the critic Tom Morton also plan on participating.

In 2018, the OSE plans on opening a new branch in the London borough of Newham with the nonprofit organization Create London. It will run in concert with the Margate school.
