George Eastman Museum Hires Curator Peter Bagrov

The George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York, has welcomed Peter Bagrov as its new curator in charge of the Moving Image Department. Bagrov most recently served as senior curator of Gosfilmofond, the national film archive of Russia. He succeeds Paolo Cherchi Usai, who departed to take up a leadership position at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, and will assume his responsibilities on August 16. Cherchi Usai will continue to work with the museum as curator at large.

In addition to his senior curatorial position at Gosfilmofond, Bagrov was artistic director of the Belye Stolby archival film festival in Moscow Oblast, Russia. He has also held several positions in academia, including at the Russian Institute of Art History, the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow, the European University at Saint Petersburg, and the Saint Petersburg State University of Film and Television, and has held fellowships at the University of Chicago and Trinity College at the University of Cambridge.

“From James Card to Paolo Cherchi Usai, the moving image collection at the museum was built and stewarded by some of the most passionate minds in the industry, and I look forward to continuing the work of my predecessors,” Bagrov said in a statement.  It will be an honor to join their ranks and perhaps eventually add some of my own personality to this illustrious collection of cinema.”
