Getty Senior Curator Steps Down

The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, has announced that Scott Schaefer, who has been its senior curator of paintings since 1999, is retiring as of January 21, 2014, reports Carol Vogel of the New York Times. Before joining the Getty museum, Schaefer held positions in the old master paintings department at Sotheby’s as well as in other museums including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Fogg Museum at Harvard University, Cambridge, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. During his time at the Getty, he organized many exhibitions including “Rembrandt’s Late Religious Portraits,” 2005, and was also responsible for adding significant acquisitions to the museum’s permanent collections. Currently no replacement has been named.
