GUARDS MURDERED IN DEIR EL-BERSHA IN EGYPT AT ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
The Association for Research into Crimes Against Art reports that two unidentified assailants shot down a pair of guards, A’srāwy Kāmel Jād and Ali Khalaf Shāker, at an archaeological site in Egypt’s Deir el-Bersha to steal artifacts. Deir el-Bersha “has been known since ancient times for its limestone quarries and its renowned Middle Kingdom nomarchal tombs.”
Though the site is extremely remote, it has been looted before. It is closed to the general public and special permission is required to visit. A government chaperone is normally assigned to oversee each visit.
