Hammer Museum Curator Tapped to Direct New Los Angeles Museum

Allison Agsten, the current curator of public engagement at the Hammer Museum, has been hired as the director of a new contemporary art and design museum being planned in downtown Los Angeles, reports Jori Finkel in the New York Times.

The museum, which is currently being referred to unofficially as the Old Bank District Museum, is a project spearheaded by local real estate developer and chairman of the board at the Southern California Institute of Architecture Tom Gilmore.

Though it has yet to be determined whether the museum will be a collecting institution or an exhibition space, architectural plans by Tom Wiscombe are currently under review at the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety and show that the project will incorporate three existing structures currently on South Main Street in downtown. Gilmore has estimated that construction could reach $50 million and take four to five years.
