HERB ALPERT FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 22ND ANNUAL AWARD WINNERS
The Herb Alpert Foundation has announced the five award winners for 2016. Established in 1994 and administered by the California Institute of the Arts, the awards honor risk-taking mid-career artists working in the fields of dance, film and video, music, theater and the visual arts for their “creativity, ingenuity, and bodies of work, at a moment in their lives when they are poised to propel their art in new and unpredictable directions.” This year’s winners are Ishmael Houston-Jones for dance, Cauleen Smith for film and video, Dohee Lee for music, Anne Washburn for theater, and Simone Leigh for the visual arts. Each artist will receive a prize of $75,000.
The panel that chose the visual arts awardee consisted of Helen Molesworth, chief curator of Los Angeles’s MOCA, Eugenie Tsai, curator of contemporary art at the Brooklyn Museum, and Emily Zimmerman, Henry Art Gallery’s associate curator of programs.
