ICA Boston Splits 2015 Foster Prize Money Among Four Nominees

The Institute of Contemporary Art revealed this year’s James and Audrey Foster Prize Artists: performance artists Vela Phelan and Sandrine Schaefer; visual artist, technologist, and DJ Ricardo De Lima; and kijidome, an artists collective. Cate McQuaid reported in the Boston Globe that each winner will be awarded an honorarium on top of the financial support they received to execute the work.

Jenelle Porter, the ICA’s senior curator, declined to disclose the amount being received by the four—though the last Foster Prize, awarded to conceptual artist Katarina Burin in 2013, was twenty-five thousand dollars. Porter says the change arose from this year’s focus on performance art: All four nominees required more money upfront than usual to execute their projects.
