The Irish Arts Center’s received a $1 million gift from New York-based businessman and philanthropist Bob Devlin and his wife Kate, in support of its new building on Manhattan’s West Side, reports Irishcentral’s Debbie McGoldrick.
Director Aidan Connolly says that the Irish government’s given $3.5 million, while the city of New York’s currently contributing a total of thirty-four million dollars to the project, with a recent addition of $4 million from Bill de Blasio’s administration. But the center will have to prove that it’s raised around 90 percent of the construction costs in order to receive funding from the city.
The new building will feature a new 200-seat theater, a café and gathering space in the lobby, new classrooms and studios, and the center’s first-ever dance floor and studio built for Irish dance performances.
The Irish Arts Center’s current visual-arts exhibition is “Trasatlantacha,” a two-person show featuring work by Galway-born Lisa O’Donnell and Maeve D’Arcy, from New York.
