Istanbul Modern Establishes Artist Residency Program

Istanbul Modern has announced the launch of its International Artist Residency Program, which was established with the support of the Istanbul Development Agency. The initiative is billed as the “first of its kind to be organized by a museum in Turkey.” Nine artists, architects, and designers who focus on the themes of craft and tradition in their practices have been selected to be a part of the first cohort.

The participating artists are Faig Ahmed (Baku), Rana Begum (London), Benji Boyadgian (Jerusalem), Rodrigo Hernandez (Mexico City), Servet Koçyiğit (Amsterdam), Outi Pieski (Helsinki), Randi & Katrine (Copenhagen), Wael Shawky (Alexandria and Philadelphia), and Jorinde Voigt (Berlin).

Each artist will spend a total of six weeks in Istanbul collaborating with local artisans. At the culmination of their stay, the works they produce will be exhibited at Istanbul Modern in 2020 and will be featured in an accompanying catalogue. The museum will also host workshops and organize public programming in conjunction with the exhibition.
