Iwona Blazwick Awarded Order of British Empire

Iwona Blazwick, director of the Whitechapel Gallery, has been awarded the Order of the British Empire, for services to art, the gallery announced today. Blazwick took her current position in June 2001, and since then has presented major exhibitions with artists such as Liam Gillick, Cristina Iglesias, Gerhard Richter, and Paul McCarthy, as well as the group exhibitions “Faces in the Crowd: Picturing Modern Life from Manet to Today” and “Back to Black.” The gallery is currently closed for renovation and expansion and is expected to reopen in spring 2009 at double its current size. Robert Taylor, Whitechapel’s chair of trustees and the chief executive of Kleinwort Benson Private Bank, said, “This honor is highly deserved recognition for someone who has made an extraordinary impact both on the visual arts and the Whitechapel Gallery’s expansion project.”
