Japan Gives $1 Million to Smithsonian

Japan will donate $1 million to the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in the Smithsonian Museums of Asian Art. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan announced the gift during his visit yesterday to the Washington museums, according to the New York Times' Kevin Flynn. The $1 million grant will fund exhibition, conservation, and research.

Julian Raby, the director of the Freer/Sackler who‘s frequently organized collaborations with Japanese institutions, will also be inducted into the Order of the Rising Sun, one of Japan’s highest honors recognizing cultural, international, and environmental achievement, reports the Washington Post's Peggy McGlone.
