Prosecutors at the Tokyo District Court asked artist Megumi Igarashi to pay a fine of around $6,600 because she carries “great criminal responsibility” for obscenity in the act of distributing three-dimensional scans of her vagina, reports the Japan Times.
Igarashi, who works under the pseudonym Rokudenashi-ko, said “Having created works that defy the (existing) image associated with genitalia, I cannot agree with my arrest.”
She sent the data to anyone donating twenty-five dollars to her crowdsourcing campaign which sought funds to help her turn the 3-D scans of her genitals into a model kayak. Artwork of hers also appeared in a Tokyo adult shop, according to prosecutors.
Those distributing obscene objects can be fined up to $20,000 under Japan’s penal code.
