Johanna Chromik Named Artistic Director of Vienna Contemporary

Vienna Contemporary has appointed Johanna Chromik as the art fair’s new artistic director. Born in Poland, Chromik was raised in Germany, where she started her career in the art world at Galerie Eigen+Art, which has spaces in Leipzig and Berlin. Since then, she has held various positions in arts administration and has led both the König Galerie and KOW in Berlin. She will assume her responsibilities at Vienna Contemporary on January 15.

“We are very happy to welcome Johanna as our new artistic director,” the art fair’s board chair Dmitry Aksenov said in a statement. “Together with the existing team, she will continue the path we set foot on in 2012 to build a strong international art fair in the heart of Europe. Within the great context of Vienna’s rich cultural past and present, we feel confident that Johanna’s experience in the art business will stimulate our growth.”

The latest edition of the fair, which closed on September 30, 2018, welcomed more than 30,800 visitors over the course of its four-day run. 118 galleries and institutions hailing from twenty-seven countries participated in the event. Its next iteration will take place at Marx Halle in Vienna from September 26 to September 29, 2019.

Commenting on her new role, Chromik said: “I am excited to join Vienna Contemporary’s team. Following the development of the fair with its unique profile and strong position in the city of Vienna for years, I very much look forward to working together with the Viennese galleries and institutions to further strengthen the international position of the fair and to contribute to the thriving Viennese/Austrian art scene.”
