Kate Fowle Named Director of MoMA PS1

MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, New York, announced today that Kate Fowle has been appointed its next director. Fowle most recently served as chief curator at the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow, and is currently director-at-large of Independent Curators International (ICI) in New York. She succeeds Klaus Biesenbach, who stepped down in October 2018 to helm the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. She will take up the post on September 3.

“Kate is a highly respected curator with a global vision and an impressive track record of success in leading major international contemporary arts organizations,” said Glenn D. Lowry, director of New York’s Museum of Modern Art. “Her extraordinary relationships with artists, commitment to scholarship and public programs, and deep connections to New York will be important to helping MoMA PS1 continue to realize its ambitious program.” Agnes Gund, who serves as chair of MoMA PS1’s board, added: “Kate is the perfect person to direct this vibrant institution and continue MoMA PS1’s role as one of the world’s leading contemporary art museums.”

During Fowle’s tenure at the Garage Museum, she oversaw the institution’s transition from an art center to a public-facing museum; worked closely with Rem Koolhaas and OMA on the design of the Garage’s first building, which opened in 2015; and led curatorial projects that ranged from exhibitions and commissions with David Adjaye, Louise Bourgeois, Marcel Broodthaers, Olga Chernysheva, Urs Fischer, Rashid Johnson, Irina Korina, Robert Longo, Anri Sala, Taryn Simon, and Rirkrit Tiravanija to launching the Garage Triennial of Russian Contemporary Art.

Prior to joining the Garage, Fowle served as executive director of the ICI from 2009 to 2013; the inaugural international curator at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing from 2007 to 2008; and chair of the master’s program in curatorial practice at California College of the Arts in San Francisco, which she cofounded in 2002. She is also the author of three books—Proof: Francisco Goya, Sergei Eisenstein, Robert Longo (2016); Exhibit Russia: The New International Decade 1986–1996 (2016); and Rashid Johnson: Within Our Gates (2016).

Commenting on her new role, Fowle said: “It’s an honor to take the helm of MoMA PS1 at this juncture in its rich history. I look forward to working with the team and board to create a generative environment where our outlook is transformed through artists and their perspectives on the world.”
