Artist Kikuo Saito has died, according to Leslie Feely gallery. Saito, born in Tokyo Japan, moved to New York City in 1966, and started his art career as an assistant to artists including Helen Frankenthaler, Larry Poons, and Kenneth Noland.

Primarily a painter, Saito also staged theater collaborations with such luminaries as Robert Wilson, Peter Brook, Jerome Robbins, and with Saito’s first wife, dancer and choreographer, Eva Maier. Saito later taught at the Art Students League, and his works are in the collections of MoMA and the Whitney Museum.
