Koos Van Den Akker (1939–2015)

Dutch-born fashion designer Koos Van Den Akker has passed away, according to NU.nl. Van Den Akker studied in France, apprenticed with Christian Dior, and then went on to launch his own stores in the US.

He soon became famous for designing bold, collaged sweaters after actor Bill Cosby began wearing them on TV, among his other creations. His designs were also seen on celebrities from Brooke Shields to Magic Johnson.

“Van Den Akker, as everyone will describe, is a collagist as much as a designer of apparel,” said Harold Koda, curator at the Met’s Costume Institute, in 2012. “But the obvious, though generally unstated, fact is that his pictorial effects are conceived and applied to an inherently three-dimensional form. Any single view of Van Den Akker’s work is necessarily only a partial one.”
