KRESGE FOUNDATION AWARDS $450,000 TO DETROIT-BASED WRITERS AND ARTISTS

The eighteen winners of this year’s Kresge Awards have been announced, reports Mark Stryker for the Detroit Free Press. Half of them are visual artists, and the other half are writers. Given by the Troy-based Kresge Foundation, the awards recognize metro Detroiters working in the visual and literary arts. Each prize winner receives twenty-five thousand dollars—an amount that winner Tiff Massey called “a game changer.”

“I can afford some of the dream tools on my list that I need for my work,” she said. “I can afford to have paid interns so I can have help with projects.”

The Kresge has awarded $3.5 million to 126 fellows since 2009. As Artforum.com reported here, the Kresge Foundation’s fifty-thousand-dollar prize for lifetime achievement went to Ruth Adler Schnee earlier this year.

The visual artists winning this year’s Kresge Awards are as follows:

Cuppetelli and Mendoza, new media art

M Saffell Gardner (Saffell), painting

Cynthia Greig, photography

Carole Harris, fiber art

Tzarinas of the Plane, performance art

Tiff Massey, metalwork, sculpture

Nancy M Mitchnick, painting

Jonathan Rajewski, painting

Chris Schanck, sculpture
