Mary Nooter Roberts has been named consulting curator of African Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Roberts is currently professor of world arts and cultures at the University of California, Los Angeles and will continue her full-time teaching position while consulting. In her new appointment, Roberts will help establish a program and gallery dedicated to the art of Africa, bringing “greater visibility to the African arts in Southern California while creating programmatic linkages between LACMA and UCLA,” states the museum in a press release.
“We have looked forward to launching a program for African art for several years and the timing seems right,” says LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg director Michael Govan. “We are excited to work with Roberts as we explore new ways of understanding and presenting the richness of African artistic expression.”
