LONDON’S GASWORKS REVEALS PLANS FOR SEPTEMBER REOPENING

The London-based arts nonprofit Gasworks will reopen to the public on September 24 after a planned overhaul by the British architectural firm HAT Projects, reports Lorena Muñoz-Alonso in Artnet. The institution closed for renovations last December.

After intensive fundraising, Gasworks recently secured ownership of the south London venue that has been its home for the past two decades. The $3.2 million project received a grant worth $1.8 million from Arts Council England, as well as donations from a number of trusts, foundations, and individuals, including Turner Prize winner Chris Ofili, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Seb Patane, and Goshka Macuga, all of whom contributed by donating works to a fundraising auction hosted by Christie’s London in 2013 which raised over $300,000. Gasworks also launched a Kickstarter campaign in October 2014.

The unveiling of the renovated space will be accompanied by an exhibition of newly commissioned work by South African artist Kemang Wa Lehulere.
