Los Angeles–Based Gallery Various Small Fires Opens Seoul Outpost

The Los Angeles–based gallery Various Small Fires (VSF) opened its second location in the Hannamdong area of Seoul, South Korea, on April 1. The new space’s inaugural exhibition is a two-person show with new works by Billy Al Bengston and Ed Ruscha, marking Bengston’s first gallery presentation in South Korea, and Ruscha’s first in the country since 1999. Solo shows of work by Joshua Nathanson, Josh Kline, and Math Bass will follow.

Esther Kim Varet established VSF in 2012. In 2014, Johnston MarkLee Architects designed its current five-thousand-square-foot space on Highland Boulevard, which features an outdoor area for installations and large-scale sculpture works. Its Seoul gallery is located in a former nail salon. VSF is named after Ruscha’s 1964 photography book, Various Small Fires and Milk, and represents artists such as Liz Magic Laser, Nikki S. Lee, and Amy Yao.
