Marina Paulenka Joins Unseen as New Artistic Director

Marina Paulenka, the current cofounder and artistic director of the Organ Vida International Photography Festival in Zagreb, Croatia, has been appointed artistic director of Unseen, the international photography platform that runs year-round programming including its main initiative Unseen Amsterdam, which will open its eighth edition in September.

Paulenka is also an artist and educator. She earned her MA in photography from the University of Zagreb, has taught at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb, and founded the Photographic Association Organ Vida—which, in addition to the festival, organizes exhibitions, events, and other programming for artists—in 2009. Paulenka succeeds Emilia van Lynden, who will remain active in the organization as a member of its international advisory committee. Her responsibilities as artistic director will include developing new projects that shed light on societal changes and push the boundaries of the photographic medium.

“I believe photography has the power to connect and boost international cultural exchange, communication, and cooperation.” Paulenka said in a statement. “It has the ability to change the way people look at the world and the problems of our contemporary society, to shatter stereotypes, to bring to the foreground untold and marginalized stories, and to inspire us to observe reality more critically. I will channel my great passion for photography into my new position as artistic director at Unseen in contributing to the organization’s continued growth, evolution, and further recognition.”
