French officials in the city of Marseilles have announced that they will host the thirteenth edition of Manifesta in 2020, David Robert of the Art Newspaper reports. This is the first time Manifesta will take place in France. Marseilles will allot almost $3 million to the contemporary art biennial, which is about half of the biennial’s projected budget.

“This is the culmination of two years of work with all the authorities,” the municipal councillor for contemporary art, Marie-Hélène Féraud-Gregori, said. “After Marseille-Provence 2013, this is excellent news for culture in Marseilles and more generally for the city’s standing within Europe.”

The upcoming edition of Manifesta, titled “What People Do for Money: Some Joint Ventures” and curated by artist Christian Jankowski, will launch in Zurich this June. The 2018 Manifesta, which will take place in Palermo, Sicily, will focus on issues of migration and climate change. The theme of the 2020 Manifesta has yet to be announced.
