Massachusetts Foundations Team Up to Launch $25 Million Arts Initiative

The Barr Foundation and Klarman Family Foundation, two Boston-based charitable organizations, are partnering on a new $25 million initiative in support of Massachusetts arts institutions. The foundations first started collaborating on how to strengthen the health of the state’s cultural sector in 2012 when they launched the Barr-Klarman Arts Capacity Building Initiative, a multiyear investment that aimed to boost the finances of thirty Boston-area arts organizations.

“Arts and cultural organizations have enormous potential to add value to the vibrancy, social wellbeing, and creative economies of their communities,” the initiative’s website reads. “Yet, amidst rapid change in our communities and broader society, these organizations must also grow and change.” According to the foundations, in addition to creating compelling programming that will engage diverse audiences, arts institutions need sound operating models, capital, and a staff and board members who are willing to adapt to an evolving economy.

As part of the new initiative, the foundations will invest $25 million in Massachusetts’s cultural landscape over a twenty-six-year period. Last week, the foundations announced the recipients of the initiative’s first set of unrestricted multiyear grants. They will also be given the opportunity to participate in a program focused on capitalization, cultural competency, and adaptive capacity, and will receive customized training and technical assistance.
