Matthew Affron Named Curator at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

Matthew Affron has been appointed curator of modern art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, effective September 1, reports Stephan Salisbury of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Affron is currently a curator and professor at the University of Virginia; he succeeds Michael Taylor, who stepped down last year after being named head of the Hood Museum at Dartmouth College. Said director Timothy Rub: “Affron’s commitment to scholarship as well as accessibility will enable us to utilize more fully an area of our collection that is known throughout the world for its scope, quality, and historical significance.” Rub also announced the appointment of Dirk H. Brieding, currently an assistant curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as associate curator of arms and armor. Brieding succeeds Pierre Terjanian, who was named arms and armor curator at the Metropolitan in 2012.
