MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART IN KRAKOW REMOVES CONTROVERSIAL ARTUR ŹMIJEWSKI VIDEO

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow has removed a provocative work of video art by Artur Źmijewski, Game of Tag, 1999, which depicts naked people playing tag in an Auschwitz gas chamber, reports Radio Poland.

The work was part of the exhibition “Poland – Israel – Germany: The Experience of Auschwitz,” which highlights art by seventeen contemporary artists. After protests by Jewish institutions including the Simon Wiesenthal Center, the Israeli Embassy—one of the show’s partners—distanced itself from supporting the artwork. Shortly after that, the museum removed Źmijewski’s piece.

It’s not the first time the work’s sparked an outcry: Four years ago it was removed from the Berlin exhibition “Side by Side, Poland – Germany: 1000 Years of Art and History,” following protests from members of the Jewish community.
