New $75 Million Museum Featuring Western and Native American Art Planned for St. Petersburg, Florida
Tom James, the executive chairman of Raymond James Financial, has unveiled plans to buy the first two floors of a building at 100 Central Avenue, where he’ll devote around half of the space’s 133,600 square feet to showcasing his comprehensive collection of Western and Native American art, reports Lennie Bennett for the Tampa Bay Times. The art collector will be giving up to seventy-five million dollars of his own funds to the museum, which is tentatively set to open in 2017.
Bennett notes that with James’s announcement, St. Petersburg will become quite the cultural hub, with four art museums total: The city already had the Dalí Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts—and now the American Arts and Crafts Movement Museum is also slated to open in 2017.
