There’s a changing of the curatorial guard at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, reports the Ontario Record. Allan MacKay, the gallery’s collections and curatorial consultant since 2001, is leaving to devote full time to his art practice. Meanwhile, Crystal Mowry, the gallery’s assistant curator for the past four years, has been named curator of exhibitions and collections.
Under MacKay’s curatorial stewardship, the gallery received increased annual support from the Canada Council and Ontario Arts Council: from $14,000 to over $150,000. MacKay also played a major role in the introduction of a regional biennial.
Mowry is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design, with a graduate degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. She came to the gallery in 2005 as a curatorial assistant and was appointed assistant curator in 2006. Since arriving, she curated a number of exhibitions that featured artists including Kelly Richardson, Janet Morton, and Adriana Kuiper.
