NEW DIRECTOR FOR NATIONAL GALLERY IN LONDON

Gabriele Finaldi, the forty-nine-year-old art historian, will be the National Gallery in London’s new director, according to Artnews’s Alex Greenberger. Finaldi will leave his position as deputy director of the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, which rehung its collection and opened an extension and research center under his watch.

Said Finaldi: “I feel deeply honored to take on the directorship of the National Gallery after Nicholas Penny.” He added: “This is a world-class collection in a world-class city and I eagerly look forward to working with the trustees and the staff to strengthen the gallery’s bond with the public and its international standing.”

The National Gallery’s been in the news recently: As Artforum.com reported here, staff members went on strike as tensions rose between management and employees.
