New Modern and Contemporary Art Museum Planned in Beirut

A new modern and contemporary art museum will be built in the Achrafieh district of Beirut, Lebanon, across from the National Museum.

The Association for the Promotion and Exhibition of the Arts in Lebanon, which is behind the project, has announced the launch of a design competition open to all Lebanese-origin architects based in Lebanon or abroad. The entrants will be judged by a jury chaired by Lord Peter Palumbo, chair of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. The jury will also include Zaha Hadid, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Julia Peyton-Jones, Rodolphe Khoury, Lamia Joreige, and Fares El Dahdah.

The museum, set to open in 2020, will be a multidisciplinary center of art and design dedicated to showcasing modern and contemporary Lebanese culture.
