Japan opened its largest art museum on Sunday, a futuristic institution with 156,000 square feet of exhibition space but without a permanent collection, reports the New York Times‘ Lawrence Van Gelder. “We will be able to bring any collections from Japan or abroad that we want at any time,” said Kisho Kurokawa, the architect of the National Art Center, Tokyo. “That unpredictable quality, coupled with our mission to attract young, new artists of quality, is the museum’s main originality.”

In other news, e-flux announces that Ângela Ferreira has been selected to represent Portugal at this year’s Venice Biennale. The Portuguese Pavilion, produced and organized by the Institute of the Arts of the Portuguese Ministry of Culture, is curated by Jürgen Bock.
