New York’s the Shed Commissions Fifty-Two Artists to Create Work in 2019

Alex Poots, artistic director and CEO of the Shed—a new visual and performing arts center currently being built in Manhattan—announced today that fifty-two New York–based emerging artists and collectives have been commissioned to create new work as part of its inaugural Open Call program. The institution received proposals that push the boundaries of six creative disciplines: design, visual arts, music, performing arts, literary arts, and cinema, and selected artists who have not yet had the opportunity to make work for a large cultural institution.

Co-organized by senior curator Emma Enderby and chief civic program officer Tamara McCaw, Open Call will provide each artist with a stipend of between $7,000 and $15,000, depending on the scope of the proposed project, in addition to institutional support and other resources for developing their work. Once completed, the pieces will be presented in the Shed’s black-box theater and open-air plaza beginning in late spring.

“We launched Open Call with the intent of creating a meaningful opportunity for emerging artists to make new work,” McCaw said. “A fundamental part of our mission is to engage our local communities and support New York City’s diversity of talent. Open Call provides the resources local artists need to fully explore their ideas, as well as the platform for reaching higher levels of visibility with new audiences.”
