Nick Mitzevich Announced as National Gallery of Australia’s New Director

Nick Mitzevich, the former director of the Art Gallery of South Australia, has been appointed the new director of the National Gallery of Australia. Mitzevich previously held directorships at the University of Queensland Art Museum and Newcastle Art Gallery. He will begin his new position on July 2, one day after Gerard Vaughan, the National Gallery’s current director, retires.

“Gerard has brought particular focus to the permanent collection during his time as director, overseeing a major rehang of the galleries which has reinvigorated the visitor experience,” Allan Myers, chairman of the NGA, said in a statement. “Along with regular gallery changeovers, there has been growth in visitor numbers and the NGA’s outstanding collection has been loaned extensively. The council wishes Gerard well in his retirement.”
