Nicolai Cikovsky Jr., an art historian who became a curator at the National Gallery of Art, has died, according to the Washington Post_’s Matt Schudel. An expert on Samuel F.B. Morse, George Inness, and William Merritt Chase, as well as Winslow Homer, whom he highlighted in a 1995 retrospective at the gallery, Cikovsky began at the National Gallery of Art in 1983 as curator of American art. He also organized shows featuring James McNeill Whistler, Ansel Adams, and Thomas Eakins. According to Schudel he helped the gallery expand its collection, acquiring works by Homer, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Albert Bierstadt, among others.
