Notre Dame Cathedral’s Spire Collapses as Fire Rages On

The Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris has partially collapsed as a devastating fire that broke out at the historic site on Monday evening continues to spread. The twelfth-century building’s iconic spire fell while firefighters battled the flames. No injuries have been reported.

According to the New York Times, the cathedral’s fire alarm went off at 6:30 PM, at which time witnesses said they had seen smoke billowing from the church’s roof. Notre Dame was evacuated, and emergency personnel arrived at the scene. While the cause of the fire is unknown, it may have been linked to construction at the site. Its roof was covered in scaffolding since it was undergoing a major restoration.

Mayor Anne Hidalgo tweeted that firefighters are “trying to control the flames” and asked people to avoid the area. A church spokesman told the Associated Press that the entire wooden interior of the beloved cathedral is burning and likely to be destroyed.

France’s president, Emmanuel Macrontweeted: “Our Lady of Paris in flames. Emotion of a whole nation. Thought for all Catholics and for all French. Like all our countrymen, I’m sad tonight to see this part of us burn.”
