In preparation for a blood drive held last week at Toulouse’s city hall, the genitals of several classical statues were covered with white paper flowers.
A blood donor quoted in the local paper, La Dépêche du Midi, commented, “When I spoke to the nurse who took care of me, she implied that some among the organizers were not comfortable with the nude statues.” According to a spokesperson for French blood bank EFS, however, the statues had already been covered before the blood drive arrived on the premises.
While it remains unclear who is responsible for the impromptu fig leaves, Le Figaro compared the censorship in Toulouse to recent events in Rome, where officials covered up nude statues on the occasion of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s January 26 visit.
