Artists Paul Chan and Paul Pfeiffer, theater artist Rinde Eckert, musician John King, and choreographer Reggie Wilson are the recipients of this year’s Alpert Award in the Arts. The award, which is sponsored by the Herb Alpert Foundation and administered by CalArts, bestows an unrestricted seventy-five-thousand-dollar cash prize to each of the awardees. “All of this year’s recipients represent the essence of the Alpert Award in the Arts,” said musician and former record-company executive Herb Alpert. “Particularly at this time of so much turbulence and possibility, we need them to keep on opening up the doors.” Seventy artists have been awarded the fellowship since it began fifteen years ago, among them Walid Raad, Christian Marclay, Catherine Opie, Cai Guo Qiang, and Jim Hodges.
