After twenty years at its current location on the second floor of 552 Broadway in Manhattan, Paul Taylor Dance Company has lost its lease, reports Daniel Wakin for the New York Times. Milton Steinberg, the building’s landlord, admits that he’s evicting the high-profile dance company to make way for a Banana Republic store on the first floor that wants to expand upward. “How can we compare the money they paid?” Steinberg said. “I feel we should get market rent, which is available.” The company is now scrambling to find new space that a nonprofit organization can afford. Taylor insists that the company stay in Manhattan rather than find cheaper rent in Brooklyn. “He feels very strongly he should be able to succeed in his hometown,” said John Tomlinson, the company’s general manager, “and his hometown is Manhattan.”
In other news, the University of California, Davis, reports that it has awarded patron Barbara K. Jackson with the UC Davis Medal, the highest tribute bestowed by the university. Jackson, one of two namesakes of the Mondavi Center’s Barbara K. and W. Turrentine Jackson Hall, received the honor last Saturday evening. “As a philanthropist of extraordinary generosity and an exceptional volunteer, Barbara has had a profound effect on the cultural landscape of our region,” university chancellor Larry Vanderhoef said.
