Phillips Collection and University of Maryland Join Forces to Create New Art Center

The University of Maryland has found a new collaborator: the Phillips Collection. According to the |–11e5-9223–70cb36460919_story.html|Washington Post|’s Peggy McGlone, the two institutions together will establish the University of Maryland Center for Art and Knowledge at the Phillips Collection, staging joint programs in art, music, research, and technology. The university’s College Park campus will also eventually have a new gallery and open storage facility with the Phillips Collection’s name.

As McGlone writes, the University was “jilted by the Corcoran Gallery” a year and a half ago in its attempts to merge with the financially troubled gallery and its art school.

“The case with the Corcoran was not quite a partnership. It was more a friendly takeover,” university president Wallace D. Loh said. “This is a partnership between two equals . . . .”
