Prince Twins Seven-Seven (1944–2011)

The Nigerian artist Prince Twins Seven-Seven, has died at the age of sixty-seven. He was a prominent member of the German linguist Ulli Beier’s Oshogbo art school and one of Unesco’s Artists for Peace. The artist changed his birth name Olaniyi Osuntoki, because he was the sole survivor of his parents’ seven sets of twins. Prince Twins Seven-Seven subject of choice was Yoruban myths, which had been recited to him by his mother. William Grimes of the New York Times quotes Henry Glassie, an emeritus folklore professor at Indiana University and the author of Prince Twins Seven-Seven: His Art, His Life in Nigeria, His Exile in America as saying, “Twins was the great modernist of the Yoruba tradition.”
