The Scotland + Venice partnership announced today that artist Rachel Maclean was chosen to represent Scotland at the fifty-seventh edition of the Venice Biennale in 2017. For the biennale, Maclean will create a film work, which is commissioned and curated by the Alchemy Film and Arts and the University of Edinburgh’s Talbot Rice Gallery.

“My work slips inside and outside of history and into imagined futures, creating hyper-glowing, artificially saturated visions that are both nauseatingly positive and cheerfully grotesque,” Maclean said. “It is hugely exciting to be representing Scotland at the Venice Biennale. I am honoured to be participating in such a significant international event and can’t wait to get started on the new commission.”

The Glasgow-based artist works in film, print, and photography and often addresses issues of identity, social values, and politics. She was nominated for the Film London Jarman Award in 2013 and won Glasgow Film Festival’s Margaret Tait Award in 2013. Maclean earned her bachelor’s degree in drawing and painting from Edinburgh College of Art in 2009.

The biennale will take place from May 13 to November 26 in 2017.
