Rana Begum Wins 2017 Abraaj Group Art Prize

The winning artist and curator of the 2017 Abraaj Group Art Prize have been announced. Artist Rana Begum, of Bangladesh, has been selected as winner of the $100,000 award, which will allow for the winning artist to develop a “dream project” that will be revealed at Art Dubai.

Begum has staged solo shows at the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, the Dhaka Art Summit, in Bangladesh, and the Delfina Foundation in London. Speaking about her win, she stated, “I have greatly admired the winning artists and works of previous years and consider it a privilege to follow in their footsteps.” Meanwhile, Doa Aly, of Egypt; Sarah Abu Abdallah, of Saudi Arabia; and Raha Raissnia, of Iran were announced as the prize’s shortlisted artists. Each will be awarded $10,000.

The prize also announced that Omar Berrada has been selected as the guest curator of the 2017 award show. The director of Dar al-Ma’mûn, a library and artists residency in Marrakech, Berrada will curate the Art Dubai show that will feature the winning commission by Begum, as well as works by the shortlisted artists.
