Mikala Dwyer has won the Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize in Sydney, receiving around $20,000, reports Sydney Morning Herald’s Joel Meares.
Dwyer’s transparent sculpture, Untitled, 2014—which she makes with a moldable plastic whose exact composition is her trade secret—secured her the prize for established artists.
Meares notes the understated piece is a far cry from Dwyer’s attention grabbing 2013 installation at Melbourne’s Australian Center for Contemporary Art. There, Perspex seats were defecated on in a ritualistic performance.
Meanwhile, a nearly $8,000 prize was awarded to Coen Young in the emerging artists category. The prize was judged by curator and artist Tim Johnson.
