Rema Hort Mann Foundation Announces Recipients of 2016 New York Emerging Artist Grants

The Rema Hort Mann Foundation announced today that eight artists will be awarded its 2016 Emerging Artist Grants. They will each receive $10,000 in recognition of their “critical and rigorous work in the field of contemporary art.” The recipients are Genesis Belanger, Teto Elsiddique, Anna Glantz, Joiri Minaya, Azikiwe Mohammed, Sara Murphy, Sondra Perry, and Adrianne Rubinstein.

The winners were selected from a pool of one hundred artists by a jury consisting of Matthew Higgs, director and chief curator at White Columns; Susan Hort, cofounder of the Rema Hort Mann Foundation; David Humphrey, a professor at Columbia University; Carolyn Ramo, executive director of Artadia; and Elisabeth Sherman, assistant curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Founded in 1995, the foundation was established by friends and family of Rema Hort Mann, who died of stomach cancer at the age of thirty, to provide support for emerging artists as well as cancer patients. It has been providing New York City artists with grants since 1996 and also recognizes eight artists in Los Angeles annually.

Past grantees include Mary Reid Kelley—who received a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship this year—Korakrit Arunanondchai, Keltie Ferris, Rashaad Newsome, Virginia Overton, Dana Schutz, Sarah Sze, Mickalene Thomas, and Kehinde Wiley.
