Museums Across NYC Announce Reopening Dates, MoMA Offers Month of Free Admission

Following New York governor Andrew Cuomo’s August 14 announcement that New York City museums were allowed to open in at 25 percent capacity as of August 24, the city’s museums hustled to dust off their cash registers and polish their floors in anticipation of their first visitors in more than five months. Below is a comprehensive list of institutions that have announced their reopenings to date, in order of the date on which they will welcome the general public.

August 27
Museum of the City of New York (Thurs.–Mon., 10 a.m.*–6 p.m.)

*The hour between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. is reserved for seniors and other high-risk visitors.

Museum of Modern Art (Mon.*–Sun., 10:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.) The institution is releasing timed tickets online in one-week blocks, beginning on August 21. Admission to the museum is free through September 27, with priority given to members. No word yet on the reopening of MoMA PS1.

*Members and members’ guests only may attend on Monday.

August 28
American Folk Art Museum (Wed.–Sun., 11:30 a.m.–6 p.m.)

August 29
Metropolitan Museum of Art (Sat.–Mon., 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Thurs.–Fri., 12 p.m.–7 p.m.). The museum will be open to members only August 27–28.

September 3
Whitney Museum of American Art (Mon. and Thurs., 11:30 a.m.–6 p.m., Fri., 1:30 p.m.–9 p.m., Sat.–Sun., 1 p.m.–6 p.m.). The museum will open to its members on August 27 and to the general public on September 3. Timed tickets are available online; the cost to the public is pay-what-you wish through September 28.

September 9
American Museum of Natural History (Wed.–Sun., 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m.). The museum is open to members from September 2.

Bronx Museum of the Arts (Wed.–Sun., 1 p.m.–6 p.m.)

September 12
Met Cloisters (hours TBD)

Brooklyn Museum (Wed–Sun., 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Fri.–Sat., 11 a.m.–8 p.m.) A community day on September 9 will be followed by member preview days from September 10–11. 

September 13
Museum of Jewish Heritage (Wed., Thur., and Sun., 10 a.m.–5 p.m.). The institution will be open to members only September 9–10.

September 15
New Museum (Tue.–Wed. and Fri.–Sun., 11 a.m.–6 p.m.; Thurs. 11 a.m.–9 p.m.). Timed tickets will be available online; admission is free through September 27.

October 3
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (hours TBD)
