Richard Serra will be awarded the Insigne de Chevalier de l’Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur by France, according to the Art Newspaper’s Charlotte Burns. The honor can go to French citizens—or foreigners who have served the country and upheld its ideals. It is the highest decoration given by the French government. Burns notes that Serra was already made Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (in 1985), Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (in 1991) and Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (in 2008).
Gérard Araud, the French ambassador to the US, said, “For the French, Richard Serra is among the greatest sculptors today.”
