Riga International Biennial Reveals Artist List for Inaugural Edition

The Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art in Latvia has announced the artists participating in its inaugural exhibition, titled “Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More” after Alexei Yurchak’s 2005 book about the collapse of the Soviet Union. Curated by the chief curator of RIBOCA1, Katerina Gregos, the biennial will feature the work of ninety-nine artists, including ten collectives. It will kick off on June 2 and run through October 28.

The exhibition invites the artists, one-third of whom are from Baltic countries, to address the “new regional geography” after the fall of the Soviet Union and the political and economic restructuring, as well as the identity renegotiation and the global reintegration, that followed. Gregos draws a parallel between the shock of the new world order when the Soviet Union dissolved and 2016—“the year of the political earthquake”—which saw “the election of President Trump, Brexit, the resurrection of nationalism, and other totally unexpected radical developments.” She added, “Many of these changes have radically altered the way we experience the world and have undermined—or overridden—all of our senses except vision.”
