Sandra Phillips Steps Down as Curator of Photography at SF MoMA

Sandra Phillips, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s curator of photography, is stepping down, reports the San Francisco Chronicle’s Charles Desmarais. She started in the department in 1987 and was later appointed senior curator in 1999. The museum added over eleven thousand new works through donations or other acquisitions launched or authorized by her.

Phillips is planning to leave as the museum unveils a $305 million renovation. “It’s a very new building, and a new museum. And photography has changed,” she told Desmarais. “I think photography deserves somebody new—newer and younger.”
