SF MOMA UNVEILS PRELIMINARY DESIGNS FOR ITS EXPANSION

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has unveiled the first designs for its expansion, developed by architectural firm Snøhetta in collaboration with SFMOMA and EHDD. The plans include an open-air eighteen-foot-wide pedestrian walkway, with staircases, landings, and terraces, leading to a redesigned facade on the museum’s east side. The building will be fifty feet taller than before. Also planned is a glass-enclosed gallery space on Howard Street, on a site occupied by a firehouse. While expanding, SF MoMA will also be constructing a replacement building on Fulsom Street, as a $10 million gift to the city’s fire department. The expansion will be completed in 2016.
